Diwali 2022- A Celebration Of Happiness And Prosperity!

The festival of lights- Diwali is one of the biggest festivals celebrated across India, mainly by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the worldThe festival of Diwali is the ultimate victory of good over evil. It is an auspicious occasion and people love to celebrate with their family and friends. Diwali is one of the major Indian festivals that connect people from every part of the country and fills everyone’s hearts with feelings of joy, happiness, and compassion. People decorate their doorways with colorful rangoli to welcome goddess Laxmi—the goddess of wealth. Earthen lamps(Diyas), hanging lamps, decorative lights, and fairy lights are used to decorate their homes and offices.

The word ‘Diwali’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’, where ‘Deepa’ means ‘light’ and ‘vali’ means ‘row’-a row of lights. The people of Ayodhya first lit diyas to welcome King Rama after defeating Demon King Ravana. Diwali is celebrated every year as per the Hindu lunar calendar between mid-October and mid-November, right around the harvest season.

The importance of a five-day festival-

Usually, a 5-day festival takes place on the night of the new moon day or Amavasya, which has its own significance.

Dhanteras-

Diwali begins with the first day, known as Dhanteras, which sets the mood for Diwali celebrations. People worship Goddess Lakshmi for their well-being and wealth, and there is a custom to purchase something precious.

Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali-

This day is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna killed the ferocious demon Narakasura, who had kidnapped more than 16 thousand women, who were freed by Lord Krishna. On this day, people keep their houses clean and use aromatic oils to keep vibrations uplifted.

Lakshmi Puja-

The third day is the main Diwali festival, and it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi enters homes and blesses people with good fortune. Diyas, candles, and electric/fairy lights are used to decorate the house.

Govardhan Pooja or Padva-

The fourth day is celebrated as Govardhan Puja or Padva. On this day Lord Krishna defeated Indra by lifting the giant Govardhan Mountain. People make a small hillock or mound, usually of cow dung, symbolizing Govardhan and worship it.

Bhai Dooj-

The last day is Bhai Dooj. On this day, sisters apply tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and pray for their long and happy life while the brothers give gifts to their sisters.
