Welcome delights of life this Varamahalakshmi Festival

Except for the cool showers that come with the monsoon season, July and August are loaded with festivities that are eagerly anticipated each year.  As the name implies,

“Varamahalakshmi” is the Goddess of Blessings and is one of the most important

festivals in India, especially in the South part of India. This event, which has a rich history, takes place on the second Friday, or the Friday before the full moon, in the Shukla paksha fortnight of the month of Shravan. This is especially significant for the South Indians as well as the North Indians. While individuals in North India praise celebrations like Teej, individuals in South India commend this sacred celebration that is known as Varamahalakshmi. This pooja is performed by people of all castes and creeds. Indians perform it with utmost dedication to obtain Goddess Lakshmi beneficent graces, which will give health, wealth, knowledge, and happiness to their family.

It is accepted that venerating Varalakshmi on this day is identical to revering Ashtalakshmi,

which implies eight types of Lakshmi –

Aadi-Lakshmi (The Great Goddess)

Dhana-Lakshmi (Goddess of prosperity and wealth)

Dhanya-Lakshmi (The Goddess of food grains)

Gaja-Lakshmi (The Elephant Goddess)

Santana-Lakshmi (The Goddess of progeny)

Dhairy Lakshmi (The Goddess of courage and valour)

Vidya-Lakshmi (The Goddess of knowledge)

Vijaya-Lakshmi (The Goddess of victory)

Varamahalakshmi, like all festivals, has its unique genesis tale. Lord Shiva tells Parvati about the varamahalakshmi vratham at the beginning of the narrative.

How fascinating is it to perform Varamahalakshmi pooja?

Well, it’s quite interesting that married women honor the Goddess Varalakshmi by engaging in this festival. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi is the same as worshipping Ashtalakshmi, which is worshipping eight Lakshmis. While married women conduct the Varamahalakshmi Vrata primarily to benefit their husbands, it also benefits their families.

Vrata and rituals for Varalakshmi

On this auspicious day, the woman takes an early bath and crafts a wonderful Lotus rangoli design in the allotted worship area, which includes a Kalash portraying Goddess Lakshmi. The consecrated Kalasha made of metal, copper, or silver, designed affectionately with saree, gold gems, and blossoms are loaded up with rice and are meticulously embellished with new betel or leaves, sweets, and savories.

Tasting Notes of Varamahalakshmi Habba

The Pooja begins with the invocation of Lord Ganesha, followed by devotion to Goddess

Lakshmi. The evenings are dedicated to visiting loved ones and exchanging heartfelt

greetings, affection, sweets, and savoury treats. Puran Poli (otherwise called obbattu or

Holige), Appi Payasa (fresh semolina wastes in milk pudding), Puliyogare (zesty tart

tamarind rice), Carrot Kosambari (a fascinating carrot lentil salad), and Godambi Thondekai

Palya (a side dish made with cashew nuts and Ivy gourd) are a portion of the strengths

prepared during Varalakshmi Pooja.
